In a country where agriculture forms the backbone of the economy, Suubi Agro Company Limited stands as a powerful example of how strategic value addition can transform raw agricultural produce into economic opportunity and community impact
Suubi Agro Company Limited is a Ugandan agribusiness enterprise founded in 2009 by Mr. Celestine Suubi. What began as a modest operation with just three raw materials—maize, soya beans, and groundnuts sourced from farmers in Jinja City—has blossomed into a thriving enterprise specializing in the production and packaging of snacks .
The company is registered in Kampala District and operates within Uganda's agriculture, forestry, and fishing sector . Its product line has diversified significantly over the years to include snacks made from locally sourced agricultural produce, such as wheat flour, pumpkin seeds, simsim (sesame), plantain, and Irish potatoes .
The Vision: Value Addition and Empowerment
From its inception, Suubi Agro Company has pursued a clear vision: to add value to agricultural produce while employing and empowering youth with practical life skills . This vision directly aligns with Uganda's National Development Plan (NDP) goals, particularly regarding job creation and empowerment for women, youth, and farmers .
The company's business model focuses on:
Overcoming Challenges
The company's journey has not been without obstacles. In 2018, Suubi Agro faced significant challenges including market limitations, inadequate storage facilities, poor quality raw materials, and substandard soya milling machines. These difficulties prompted a strategic relocation from Wanyange in Jinja district to Ssekanyoni Zone, Kampala district .
This move proved transformative, providing access to better and more spacious facilities, higher-quality raw material supplies, and a wider market base for their products .
Impact on the Community and Economy.
Job Creation
Suubi Agro currently employs over 70 Ugandans, comprising youth, men, and women—both skilled and non-skilled workers. These employees are involved across the entire value chain, from production to the sale and distribution of snacks in supermarkets, wholesale, and retail shops across the country.
Supporting Local Farmers
A core tenet of the company's operations is empowering local farmers by purchasing their produce. The company sources raw materials primarily from Ugandan farmers in districts including Jinja, Kayunga, Hoima, Kibuuku, Namutumba, Budaka, Kitgum, Kasese, Kisoro, and Soroti. This direct procurement model provides farmers with reliable markets, stable incomes, and incentives to increase production and improve quality.
Quality Assurance
In a competitive market, Suubi Agro places strict emphasis on quality control, ensuring adherence to regulations set by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS). Key quality control measures include rigorous ingredient selection, advanced production processes, regular testing and inspection, ongoing quality audits, and packaging integrity.
As Mr. Suubi states, “At Suubi Agro Company Limited, quality isn't just a process, it's a promise. From the first ingredient to the final product, we strive to deliver snacks that you can trust and enjoy with every bite”.
Recognition and National Importance
The company's impact has attracted attention at the highest levels. During a visit to the company, Hon. Evelyn Anite, the State Minister of Finance for Investment and Privatisation, lauded Suubi Agro as an example for all Ugandans, committing to support anyone who ventures into agricultural value addition.
"To my fellow Ugandans, yes, it's possible to start a business in Uganda and benefit from government tax and non-tax incentives. I'm committed to walking this journey with you, from idea to implementation," Hon. Anite declared.
A Model for Economic Growth
Suubi Agro Company Limited provides a compelling case study for how agribusiness drives economic growth in Uganda. Through job creation, providing markets for local produce, contributing to industrialisation, developing skills, generating tax revenue, and reducing poverty, the company exemplifies the transformative power of agribusiness when rooted in innovation, quality, and a commitment to community empowerment.
It serves as a beacon for other entrepreneurs and a clear demonstration of how Uganda can achieve sustainable economic growth by harnessing the potential of its agricultural sector through strategic value addition
